‘revenant’ is an ongoing project with open membership that focuses on site-specific acoustic actions. All sounds originate from materials found in-situ, and from interactions with the space itself.

'There were some “dark” elements surrounding this session. It was mid-November in the Baltics which meant that it was cold, gray and the sun goes down early. By the time we entered the bunker and set up to record there was no natural light left to see. Trying to find a shared experience through improvisation among a group that is not familiar is hard enough, trying to do this in the dark in an unfamiliar place is even harder. Knowing we would be without visual and sometimes auditory communication because of the multiple spaces available I suggested to do a recording experiment, to each use our own equipment yet synchronize the timing at the start. If we were to get “lost” or immersed in our own experiences, it would be interesting to reassemble them later as a shared “fictional” space. This is indeed what we ended up with. Using only my ears and a headlamp to guide my way, I foraged through that unknown space collecting objects and playing them on the varied surfaces I discovered. I remember the old rags, the dust, broken pieces of concrete, pipes coming out of the ground and how I searched for ways to animate the space and instigate interactions with the others. Whether it was the quest for new objects or the need to stay warm I constantly moved around and even ended up outside toward the end. (John Grzinich)'

A compilation of five rich and beautiful works, produced through a unique collaborative process, realized from fieldrecordings, yet sounding unlike a “fieldrecording compilation”, each track sounding very different to the others.

“Three Locations” is a project where each artist gave three field recordings, creating a pool of source material spanning the docks of Norway to mountains in southern Japan, from the French Atlantic Coast to an underground river tunnel hidden beneath Australia‘s urban depths. From this pool of frozen moments each artist was given three fieldrecordings in return with which to produce a piece in their own style, uncovering deeper connections and dramaturgies buried within these recorded locations.

João Castro Pinto:Sound artist and more from Lisbon, Portugal, definitely a person with a short, middle and extended biography like everyone of us, João will take a break from his trans-disciplinary perspective of confrontation concerning the new digital media that he deals with during his tour and present the results of the recordings he made between Lisbon and Sintra. The title of the piece – Peripatetikós – refers to the walks by Aristitotle’s disciples. They probably needed these to get away from Ari’s talks every now and then.

Felicity Mangan is from Australia and on a quasi permanent vacation in Berlin. Part of her performance will/might be made up of the sounds from native Australian animals. She will focus on how they create vibration and percussive sounds. But there is still more to explore. Just come and hear…

Benjamin Laurent Aman will mostly play tapes. Nice! This means he will bring cassette recordings, a fact that adds to the pleasure of watching the artist in action. He has told me what sounds he recorded, but I am not going to list them all. The material reads as a map of France, but it also brings about the actions involved: travelling, visiting, waiting and coming home. The listener will be brought to public and intimate moments. Benjamin will move between climax and catastrophe. I am not sure if he will play drones.

My First Field trip out from MoKS.
Yesterday John Grzinich (who is the media artist on site at MoKS) took us (me and Eamon Sprod - who is artist-in- residence at MoKS) to an old Soviet army base.
It was a raining, cold day. We drove from Mooste across the border into Latvia were the base was situated.
Apparently the base was still occupied until 1994, the building were striped and left to decay.

We were also meeting Maksims shentelevs and Kaspar who are member of the Bernurits (collective) a who were driving from their home town Riga, Latvia. The idea was to do some recordings together in a bunker that was on the site.

Shoeb Ahmad / Kristi Monfries - Shoeb Ahmad - Returning to Melbourne to launch his new release 'Sea Songs, Dead Ends And Sleeping Pills' (Sound&Fury) and it's companion on 'In The City' (hellosQuare), Stutter will see Shoeb explore extended improvisation using guitar and loops alongside preparations and found sound while navigating the naive songforms of his previous work.

Kristi Monfries' work is dedicated to a range of mediums that include collage work appropriation pieces, improvised and experimental music, single chanel video and live video improvisation in combination with musicians, print/design/web. Focused on an individual and whole artistic approach to living, feminine identity and sexuality, media gathering and re-invention.

This will be a first time collaboration between Canberra musician Shoeb Ahmad and ex Canberra visual/video artist Kristi Monfries.

Spartak Quartet - Spartak swell to a four tet for a special show in Melbourne to coincide with the Colony Room tour. Featuring Felicity Mangan (bass + electronics) and Kusum Normoyle (voice + electronics) alongside the duo of Shoeb Ahmad (guitar + loops) and Evan Dorrian (drums + percussion), expect some bustling noise alongside dysfunctional rhythms and microtonal whirr, somewhere between beautiful and retarded.

Kusum Normoyle - As a vocalist and electronic artist, Kusum's sound has developed a sympathy for broken language and communication technologies. She uses the outer limits of her voice, in combination with varying electronic media, broken instruments, radios, microphones to explore improvisation and vocal norms. A graduate from Electronic Arts at UWS, she is a practicing sound artist /musician in Sydney who has performed alongside Marcus Schmickler, Lawrence English, Jacques Soddell and Toy Bizarre amongst others.

David Shea / Kristi Monfries - Caves of the Silk Road: A solo sampler work based on the Buddhist stories of the ancient trading route from China to Turkey. Along the desert in China travelers would visit caves along the road which functioned as temples and devotional sites. Still filled with paintings, statues and layered in mythological stories I follow the path of a traveler in a solo sampler piece based on stories of three of the caves.

David's performance will also be accompanied with visuals by Kristi Monfries.

Flash back...In Paris I bumped vodca and tonic near my lap top. My lap top never recovered so l wasn't able to blog for the rest of my time on tour or while I was over seas. I returned home to Melbourne a week ago, thought I'd do a bit of a flash back photo post of Portugal.

For the last six days we have spent an average of four/five hours a day in the van travelling between place/countries. We have moved between germany, France, switzerland, Italy back through Switzerland now in France. Pat just worked out that we have traveled 8536 kms and have done 94hrs driving!!
Leaving Germany we passed through Kassel to see the Documenta ..with only three hours of time l was only able to get through one of four building in the Documenta. No photos of the art works but saw this teenage walking around on stilts

Traveling back from Treiste we stoped of at Venice...with only five hours in this city we spent time eatting spagettiii and drinking wine and walking about the maze of streets.

I'm currently in Berlin....enjoying some free time before we start another string of dates through the west side of europe.
After leaving poland we headed for Praha, czech. We played a show run by two guys that run a gallery in Praha and also organise live shows just the love of it. They cooked us up some amazing vegan food before we played in a club that has been running for ten years under massive student accomidation buildings. During the day we did an intereview on state radio. Didn't get much time to explore praha... only the sights of a crazy trail taken/seen throught the van windows through the old town's cobble roads by the GPS (lady) who decides the best route our driver to take to our desintations???

Another city, another bed, another venue .....another van. We have been touring for just over a week, l have been to seven cities through Scandonvia and Poland. Just finished playing four shows through Poland...now sitting in an underground pub using free wifi listening to polish metal. Before we hit Stockholm, about one hour before we were to play a show our Van's turbo (something) blew up on the high way, a massive cloud of smoke came over our van and covering four lanes of the highway....we had to pull over then all jump out of the car into the cloud of smoke, l couldn't see anything but l knew the there was railing alone the freeway that l needed to clear...l lept out of the van into the smoke, l must of got some hight, when l hit the ground l some how had jared a finger. After hitting the ground I crawled up the hill to get away from the van, everyone else run down the side of the highway....a really nice trucky pulled over strait away to help us not long after two fire trucks and a police car arrived...the smoke settled and our hearts and then we began to plot our way to the venue...we were about fourty minutes away from the venue..most of us got into Taxis and Pat got a lift in the police car after the tow track removed the van from the scene. We got to the venue right at the end of set of band that was playing before us...we set up and played, we played one of the best shows so far that night.
We towed the van back to Poland where it's owner lives, catching the ferry from a little south of Stockholm then we exchange vans and got back on the road for a string of Poland shows. We are now in Cracow in the south of Poland having some down time before heading to prague.

l have been living in a small remote village in northeast Poland for a month...l have meet lots great people and have stored many memories. 15/5/2008 I have gone back into this blog six month later after tour finished to add text. At the time of this experience l found l could not write about it. I feel at this pointed in time I need to write something before l forgot or my memories became to distorted and faded.
I made this blog to post pictures and words about my trip to europe to tour with Function Ensemble and for my friends and family to keep an eye on me.
Function Ensemble is a project of Matthew Nicholson who writes songs with many people he meets and friends. I meet Matthew when l was 15 years old, we lived in a industrial town called Geelong which in one hour from Melbourne. We played music in bands that existed in the mid to late nineties in Geelong. Since the late nineties he has lived in many places around the world and l have lived in Japan. Melbourne and Tasmania. At times we crossed paths in these places that were other then our home town. I think it was when l was living in Kyoto, Japan that we spoke about doing some music together. In 2004 we worked on a couple of songs that are on the Function album 'The Secret Miracle Fountain'. I have toured to US to play the Locust Record showcase in 2006 with Function, last year l went to europe to tour.
The Plan for getting the six of us together before touring Europe, these six people being matt nicholson, clare tuckley, pascal babare, ian wadley and patrick liddell, who are all Australian born (but one American, Patrick) are know a little scatted across the globe, living in the US, Japan and Australia. Matt's idea was to meet somewhere in Eastern Europe, Through contacts via the myspace machine I was to meet all these people in a small village in north-west poland, a village of 120 people called Glishno Weilki. I arrived here early July after flying through Tokyo, Japan, staying here for a few days to visit friends then I flew through to Warsaw, then took a five hour train ride to Gdansk were l was picked up by Matt and Pat. A thing happen that l need to make note just for my own personal archive is that my flick flack watch stopped, l had been wearing since I was eleven, though for two year sat in my draw, it stopped ten minutes before l was to meet the guys. It's Still broken.
After being picked up by Matt and Pat l was taken back to a loft flat above a polish family's house. We reunited after not seeing each other since march 2006 as l sat in the feeling of jet lag. I had then for the first time come to be in the northern most part of the world l had even been.
Most of these photos l have posted are views from window of this loft flat.
We stayed in this village for one month to practice songs to be played on the tour. Strong memories of this place. Drinking lots of shots of vodca, practicing everyday, swimming in the lake, eatting mash potato and kilbasa.
